The first grounds in our care

After proving the idea on our own ground, Greensward is now looking after its first private estate in Jersey. A note on beginning, and on the trust that comes with someone else's garden.

For a while, Greensward watered one lawn: our own. That was deliberate. Before asking anyone to trust a system with grounds they care about, we wanted to be sure it worked on ground we could watch every day, in real Jersey soil, through real Jersey weather, with nothing to hide behind.

That season is over. A private estate here on the Island has become our first customer, and the work of putting Greensward into its grounds has begun.

What a first customer means

It is one thing to prove a decision engine on your own test plot, where a mistake costs you nothing but a lesson. It is another to be handed the care of a garden that someone lives with, looks at each morning, and has spent years bringing to where it is. That is a different weight, and we feel it.

A fine garden is judged by eye, every day, by the people who live with it. No amount of clever engineering changes that standard; it only has to meet it. So the promise we have made is a plain one: to water these grounds precisely, to water them quietly, and to be able to show, in plain English, the reason behind every decision the system makes.

Beginning, not arriving

We are at the start of this, not the end of it. The first weeks are the unglamorous ones: reading the property's soil, placing sensors at root depth, learning how this particular ground holds water and where it sheds it, which in Jersey is never quite the same from one corner to the next. A garden teaches you its habits slowly, and we would rather learn them properly than rush.

What we can say is that the idea we have argued for on these pages, watering on evidence rather than habit, now has a real garden to answer to. That is exactly where we wanted to be.

Earning it

To the owner who said yes first: thank you. Being someone's first is a particular kind of trust, made before there is a track record to point to, and we do not take it lightly. We intend to earn it, one quiet, well-judged watering at a time.

This is where our journey properly begins. We are excited, and we are humbled, and we are getting to work.
